Never smoke in bed. Nod off for a second, and you may never wake up.

Extension cords are only a temporary solution. If the number of outlets is insufficient, have an electrician wire additional ones.

If you are using an extension cord temporarily, ensure that it is in good repair, CSA approved, and suitable for the job. Never place cords under carpeting, or through walls.

Never use an outdoor extension cord indoors, or vice versa. Indoor and outdoor extension cords are designed differently. Improper usage could cause a fire.

Keep any combustible material at least one meter / 3 feet away from any space heater. Never use an extension cord with a space heater. They draw 1500 watts of power, and could overwhelm an extension cord.

If you light candles, ensure that they are extinguished before you leave the room, or go to bed. (see Candle Safety for more information)

Sleep with bedroom doors closed. When the smoke alarm sounds, it will keep the smoke and heat at bay temporarily, while you make you escape. ( see Home Fire Escape Plans for more info )

Ensure that windows are operational, and that your family can quickly and safely climb out of them in an emergency.

If your bedroom is on the second floor, you may need an escape ladder to get out safely.

It's essential that there is a smoke alarm outside all sleeping areas. You should also consider placing one inside each bedroom as well.

A carbon monoxide detector should be placed outside of every sleeping area as well.
