Candle Safety | Smoke Alarms | Carbon Monoxide | Room To Room Safety
Have your fireplace or wood stove cleaned and inspected at least once a year. ( that includes the chimney ) Ensure that your fireplace has either heat tempered glass doors, or a metal fire screen to stop sparks. Fireplaces and wood stoves consume oxygen as they burn. Be sure that either they have their own fresh air intake, or crack a door or window to provide ventilation. If you smoke, use a deep metal ashtray, and dampen ashes often. Lighters and matches should be kept away from children's reach at all times, never leave them on coffee or end tables or anywhere children can get them. Keep space heaters at least one meter / 3 feet from any combustibles, including drapes and curtains. Always use candles in a supervised safe manner, and extinguish them before leaving the room. (See Candle Safety for more information) Extension cords are only a temporary solution. If the number of outlets is insufficient, have an electrician wire a new one. If you are using an extension cord temporarily, ensure that it is in good repair, CSA approved, and suitable for the job. Never place cords under carpeting, or through walls. Never use an outdoor extension cord indoors, or vice versa. Indoor and outdoor extension cords are designed differently. Improper usage could cause a fire. Televisions, stereos, DVD players, etc. can get very hot. Make sure you have space around them, and don't put papers or clothing on them. Give them space.
