RE: "Staying Alive" Program

Each year, thousands of families are impacted by the tragic occurrences of fire where significant property damage and injuries result. In fulfilling our mandates of saving lives and protecting property, firefighters recognize that communities are better protected by placing greater emphasis on fire prevention and public education activities.

Promoting fire safety in children beginning at a very young age has been proven to be effective in equipping individuals with the necessary skills to know how to react when a fire occurs. The Staying Alive Program through its interactive website and Great Escape CD is an innovative and highly effective way to teach children the hazards of fire, the importance of home escape planning, and other fire safe behaviors that will protect them for a lifetime.

The success of the Staying Alive Program would not have been possible without the tireless work of Senior Fire Fighter Shane Ferguson who has committed himself to promoting fire safety in children. His efforts have been supported by many important community partners who have donated goods, services, or financial resources to the program.

On behalf of the men and women of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, I would like to confirm our support for the Staying Alive Program and extend our appreciation for job well done. Great work!

Yours truly,

W.H. (Wes) SHOEMAKER
Fire & Paramedic Chief
